Cannabis oil (CBD) CBD oil is a type of cannabinoid mixed with another oil such as coconut or hemp. There is currently not enough evidence based research to support using cannabinoids in reducing musculoskeletal pain. Arthritis Ireland will continue to monitor this and are waiting for further solid scientific research before we could advise on its usage for people with arthritis. The licencing authority for medicines in the Ireland, the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA), does not license CBD oil as a medicine. The HPRA has published a scientific review on cannabis for medical use, which you can read here. It is very important that if an individual is considering using CBD to manage pain, it is crucial to remember that it cannot replace your current medicines and may interact with them and have a significant effect. We would strongly advise talking to your GP or consultant before you start taking any drug supplements.
