Emma O'Carroll Edgar Stene Prize Winner 2024

Huge congratulations to Emma O’Carroll who is the 2024 winner of the Edgar Stene Essay Competition Prize. Emma lives with axial spondyloarthritis (or axSpA).

The prize is awarded every year to the best essay contribution submitted by a person with arthritis or other rheumatic or musculoskeletal disorders (RMDs) describing their individual experience.

For two consecutive years, Irish participants have clinched victory in the EULAR Edgar Stene Essay competition due to their outstanding entries.

As part of her prize, Emma enjoyed a trip to Vienna to attend the EULAR Congress 2024 in June, where she had the opportunity to read her inspiring essay.

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome associated with widespread pain and fatigue. There are no outward signs of the condition but fibromyalgia symptoms include severe pain, fatigue and stiffness.
Amitriptyline

Amitriptyline (Amitriptyline Hydrochloride, Astilin) belongs to a group of drugs called tricyclic antidepressants. Although they are still used to treat anxiety and depression, they are also now widely used at lower doses to help block the chronic (long-term) pain of some rheumatic conditions.
