Cork sporting legend and physiotherapist, Rena Buckley, has today (13 August) launched Team Arthritis Ireland for The Echo Women’s Mini Marathon.
The 18-times All-Ireland winner said that: “The 6km mini marathon could be a positive goal for someone with arthritis, even if they haven’t been doing much exercise up to now.
“Exercise is important for everyone. Adults should look to achieve 30 minutes of moderate exercise at least five days per week. You may need to tailor the exercise to suit your body, but exercise is important for everyone,” she said.
Meeting with members of the Arthritis Ireland Cork branch and walking group at The Lough on Tuesday morning, Buckley added: “Exercise is hugely enjoyable, can be sociable and it's great for body and mind.”
Arthritis Ireland is the national patient organisation representing one million people who are living with arthritis in this country. The charity is encouraging people to participate in The Echo Women’s Mini Marathon, as physical activity has health benefits for people with arthritis. The event is also a valuable fundraising opportunity for the charity.
Chief executive of the organisation, Gráinne O’Leary, said: “We are hugely dependent on the generosity of the general public to support our work in providing services and supports for people who are living with arthritis – in Cork and all around the country. Money raised by people who fundraise on our behalf and participate in the mini marathon support our self-management courses, the helpline, public health education campaigns and research, as well as our work in the community.”
The Echo Women’s Mini Marathon takes place in Cork on Sunday, 22 September. The event is organised and hosted by Cork Athletics; entry costs €16. To register to join Team Arthritis Ireland, visit www.arthritisireland.ie.
Rena Buckley won 11 senior All-Ireland football medals and seven senior All-Ireland camogie medals with Cork. She was the joint winner of The Irish Times Sportswoman of the Year in 2016. She continues to play football and camogie at club level with Donoughmore and Inniscarra respectively. A chartered physiotherapist, she has her own practice in Macroom and leads Be Active with Arthritis classes organised by Arthritis Ireland.
