Gifting for the Future - Arthritis Ireland's Legacy Charter

Including Arthritis Ireland in your will is a big decision to make. When deciding to leave a gift to Arthritis Ireland’s work for people with arthritis, there are many things to think about. Naturally, you will want to make sure you take care of your family and loved ones first. But, there’s a lot more to consider. That is why Arthritis Ireland has developed our first ever Legacy Charter. This charter outlines our commitments to you and has been developed to ensure that you feel comfortable about leaving a gift to people with arthritis in your will.

1.

We will always respect your privacy. We recognise and appreciate that your will is completely personal to you.

2.

We also realise that, quite rightly, your family and loved ones will always come first.

3.

Because we are committed to making a difference to the lives of people with arthritis, we will always encourage people to consider leaving a gift to Arthritis Ireland. But we recognise that it’s your decision and you need to make it in your own time.

4.

You can tell us that you’ve left a gift if you want to, and we’d love to hear, but you don’t need to.

5.

If you choose to tell us, we will always give you the choice about how we talk to you in the future.

6.

We will give you and your family as much choice as possible about how and where your gift will be used to make a difference to the lives of people with arthritis.

7.

We will use your gift carefully and cost effectively so that it has the greatest impact on the lives of people with arthritis.

8.

We will give you the opportunity to be connected with the work we do that is made possible by gifts like yours.

9.

At any time in the future, you have the absolute right to change your mind about a gift in your will to Arthritis Ireland.

10.

We will handle whatever gift you leave us efficiently and also with care, sensitivity and respect.

Legacy types

If you would like to remember Arthritis Ireland in your will, there are three kinds of legacy you may leave:

  • Residuary
  • A residuary legacy is the gift of the residue of your estate, or a share of the residue, after other bequests to your family and friends and all debts, taxes and expenses have been paid. Generally, this is the kind of legacy that is of greatest benefit to us, as its value increases in line with the value of your estate.

  • Pecuniary
  • A pecuniary legacy is a specified sum of money, determined when the will or codicil is written.

  • Specific
  • When a particular item of value is bequeathed, this is a specific legacy. This can include stocks and shares, proceeds of a life assurance policy or property.

If you have an existing will

If you already have a will, it is easy to amend it and include a gift to Arthritis Ireland. Minor changes like this do not require a new will, as an existing will can be amended by completing a codicil, which your solicitor can help you draw up.

If you wish to make a legacy to Arthritis Ireland or would like further information, please contact Nichola Mullen on 01 647 205 or nmullen@arthritisireland.ie.
