About Arthritis Ireland

Who we are

Arthritis Ireland,Ireland's only arthritis charity enabling people with arthritis to take their lives back. We provide real solutions. We empower people with arthritis and those caring for them to take positive actions to manage the effects of their disease on their lives.

We dramatically improve the quality of life of people affected with arthritis through the provision of innovative and life changing education and support programmes which are specially designed to give people with arthritis the information and skills they need to take back control of their disease and their life.

  • We actively support research into arthritis to ensure that Ireland is at the forefront of new break-through’s leading to possible cures.
  • We fund training of health professionals  through university medical schools to create a direct and positive improvement in patient care.
  • We lobby Government departments to invest the necessary funding in rheumatology services to provide a world class service that will positively  change  the outlook and outcome of patients lives.

Our key objectives

  1. Supporting People with Arthritis

Arthritis has no cure. Many people with arthritis feel isolated and uninformed. Providing support and information empowers people with arthritis to make decisions about their disease and their life.

An informed patient is a patient more likely to lead a better quality of life and make more of a contribution to society.
    (PARE manifesto)

Arthritis Ireland provides these vital services through nationwide lectures, public information days, the Arthritis Self-Management and Back to Work Programmes and via the growing network of support groups provided by our 14 vibrant branches located throughout the country.

  2. Finding a Cure

Arthritis Ireland endeavours to facilitate research into the prevention, causes and cure of arthritis. To this end, we aim to establish an academic Chair Of Rheumatology in at least one University Hospital in Ireland. This is vital to raise the standards of academic rheumatology within the University system and ensure that Irish researchers remain to the forefront in the continuing search for the causes, treatments and cure of this disabling condition.

  3. Lobbying for Better Patient Care

Ireland has the lowest number of Rheumatologists per head of population of any EU country with only 1 rheumatologist for every 400,000 people. The World Health Organisation recommends a minimum of 1 rheumatologist per every 65,000 people. Arthritis Ireland is the umbrella lobbying group actively calling for improved rheumatology services in Ireland. We are striving to achieve the gold standard of care that matches, if not exceeds, the best in Europe.

What our friends say

I was in a lot of pain, I felt lonely and I was facing an uncertain future. I felt isolated and often tried to hide the fact that I had arthritis.
…When I attended the rheumatology clinic I was surrounded by people with grey hair, so I felt very alone. Learning about Arthritis Ireland's patient groups and meeting with young people with arthritis was a major turning point for me.
